Indian Handicrafts' Exports Register 25% Growth In 2005

Provisional data indicates that export of handicrafts from the country increased by Rs 2,568 crore during the previous financial year. According to Mr Navratan Samdria, chairman of the export promotion council for handicrafts (EPCH), export of
  • art metalware,
  • woodware,
  • handprinted textiles and scarves,
  • embroidered and crocheted goods,
  • zari goods,
  • premium shawls and
  • imitation jewellery

    showed an increase.

Export of handicrafts has risen by 24.5% during ‘04-05, as the segment has managed to tap emerging markets like
  • Latin America,
  • Central Asia,
  • Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and
  • African nations.
To further boost export of handicrafts from the country, an India expo center and mart is being set up at Greater Noida with an investment of Rs 700 crore. A special purpose vehicle, India exposition mart (IEM), has been set up for this purpose. The ambitious project is jointly promoted by the textiles ministry, EPCH, and the Greater Noida authorities.

The first phase of the Expo Mart will be partially operational this month and fully operational by October this year to provide high tech facilities to exporters to market their products in an international ambience. The master plan of the project provides for 20,00,000 lakh sq ft space, covering various facilities like exhibition halls, exposition mart, restaurants, conference centre, food plaza and a hotel. The mart has been conceived on the lines of the marts in the US, Europe and China, the statement said.

Exports during the year were Rs 14,033 crore as compared to Rs 10,465 crore in ‘03-04, according to a statement issued. In dollar terms, exports increased to $672m in ‘04-05, registering a growth of 29%.

Export of embroidered and crocheted goods increased to Rs 4,200 crore during ‘04-05 as compared to Rs 3,286 crore in the previous fiscal year. This indicates an increase of 32%, he said.

Export of art metalware increased to Rs 3,365 crore from Rs 2,642 crore, the statement said. Mr Rakesh Kumar, executive director of EPCH, said reasons for the growth in exports include entry into new markets, modifications in the product line as per customer designs, improvement in quality and reduction in production costs.
