The Uttar Pradesh government has directed all district development authorities to ensure installation of sewage treatment plants (STP) in new housing colonies, an official said Wednesday.

"The government has made the installation of STP mandatory for all forthcoming housing schemes. The move intends to develop cleaner residential colonies in the state," Lucknow Development Authority secretary Mani Prasad Mishra told IANS.

He added that strict action will be taken against builders who fail to comply with the government directive. The action could be as stringent as scrapping of construction licences.
