Taking a serious view of the growing ecological imbalance and increasing global warming, the Art of Living (AOL) Foundation has launched Mission Green Earth to encourage people to stand up and take action towards environmental sustainability .

The initiative has been launched in collaboration with the United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC).

Over 10 crore trees will be planted all over the world under the initiative.

Over 10,000 will be planted in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) to help reduce global warming and protect the environment.

The drive started late last month.

Saplings have already been planted in many parts of Delhi and the NCR. The target will be completed by October 16, 2008.

In east Delhi,AOL volunteers are working in full swing to plant as many trees as possible.

"We are requesting citizens, NGOs and RWAs to contribute towards this initiative. Saplings are being planted not just in barren land but in housing societies, schools, colleges, green belts, roadsides and other common places too," says Deepak Joshi, coordinator of the IP Extension area.In Noida, AOL volunteers are making people aware of the mission in order to motivate them. Different residents welfare associations (RWAs) in the city have extended full support to the programme.

Rajiv Satyakam, secretary of the Federation of Sector 62 RWAs, has issued a circular to member RWAs to be in touch with AOL co-coordinator Prabhat Kumar and get involved in making this task a success.

The saplings are available at the petrol pumps, CNG stations and Mother Dairy booths all over the city.

According to the plan, AOL volunteers will supervise the resident volunteers to complete the task efficiently.

"The idea is to encourage and motivate people to join hands towards a pollution free clean and green environment. No remedial measure can save the ecosystem without mass awareness and involvement," says Neeta Verma, AOL co-coordinator (NCR) for the mission.

"People must not just plant trees but also nurture them till they are strong," she says.

"Mother nature is highly affected by the increasing commercialisation.

Trees are being chopped off, forests are being tampered with. We should work for saving the environment in order to pass on a better world to the coming generations," she says.

AOL has also requested the Horticulture Department of the Noida Authority and the District Forest Department to contribute in the mission.
