Soon a cyber highway will connect all police stations in the city with the headquarters and an e-driven system to regulate traffic will be in place. And following the outcry over missing children in the capital in the last one month, the Delhi Police also announced a helpline to deal with missing persons cases.

The police have appointed RITES as consultant for drawing up a road map for the Rs 170 crore intelligent traffic system (ITS), while engaging MTNL for the Rs 27.37 crore cyber highway project.

Said Delhi police commissioner Y S Dadwal: "The cyber highway will connect all police stations with district and central headquarters. The movement of information will be very fast and this will be a quality jump once we complete the project." The project will be convergent with key applications of Delhi Police like CIPA automated vehicle tracking service (AVTS).

Besides police stations and other offices of the force, the ITS and 58 CCTV cameras covering prominent markets and 27 Delhi borders will also be covered by the cyber highway. The ITS will be stateof-the-art, for which RITES has been asked to prepare a road map along with a German firm. "We will float a global tender by April for the project," Dadwal said.

The ITS, which is likely to be completed before the Games, will have a control room in Malviya Nagar. "Once the project is realised, we will be able to see live situations on roads and take necessary action. ITS is based on three core features which are information, communication and integration for managing transport networks as well as services for commuters," Dadwal said. The police have already identified 55 major roads 217.96km and about 200 intersections to be covered under the system for traffic management.

Monitoring of traffic on roads and intersections will be the main thrust of the ITS using high resolution cameras. The Delhi Police has already entered into an agreement with Electronic Corporations of India Limited (ECIL) for setting up 58 CCTV cameras across the capital.
