Each day, more than one billion children in the world attend school. Whether they sit in buildings, tents or under trees, ideally they learn, develop and enrich their lives. A year from now, children in Uttar Pradesh will surely be better off when compared to their counterparts in India, at least on parameters of learning.

The reason: UP's education department has taken a lead among all Indian states by adopting the principle of `child friendly schools (CFS)' in letter and spirit. The concept note is ready and guidelines to train teachers (known as `Unnayan') for the job is in final stages.

In fact, the CFS model is based on a simple concept. It assumes that schools should operate in the best interests of children. Educational environment must be safe, healthy and protective, endowed with trained teachers, adequate resources and appropriate physical, emotional and social conditions for learning.

Within a CFS, childrens' rights must be protected and their voices must be heard. Learning environment must be a haven for children to learn and grow, with innate respect for their identities and varied needs. The CFS model promotes inclusiveness, gender-sensitivity, tolerance, dignity and personal empowerment.

``Basic tenets of the CFS model have been taken into account while preparing the Unnayan draft,'' said a senior officer associated with the project. "The concept has been Indianised by taking into account elements serving the mid-day meal, holding health check-ups, forming child committees and holding Bal Sansad and Meena Manch, etc.," he said.

"This is a giant leap in the field of education... pedagogists and educationists have been talking about the concept since long. But, UP has gone ahead to show a way," stated Vinoba Gautam, education consultant with Unicef, which has played a key role in drafting Unnayan along with the team of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

Professor of elementary education, National Council for Education, Research and Training, TK Bansal said that childfriendliness can play a major role in checking school dropout rates. But success of the project lies in the hands of teachers. "UP has certain inherent merits in its education infrastructure. This includes pedagogy (or art of teaching), teacher training components, structure of cluster resource and block resource centres... In short, we can hope for the project's success," said Prof Bansal when asked to comment on the potential of the project.
