Even as protests turn violent down South over the issue of de-recognition of universities, institutes up north are optimistic about winning this legal battle.

The Jaypee University in Noida is one of the 44 universities on the HRD Ministry's hit list. However, the students of the institution see no reason to worry even though many were initially left shocked and dumbstruck. After the Supreme Court's stay order on Monday, the initial panic seems to have taken a backseat.

Set up by real estate giant, the Jaypee Group, the university has 3000 students spread over 9 courses and was given the deemed university status in 2001.

Ironically, in August 2009 a statutory body of the University Grants Commission (UGC) had visited the Jaypee campus and had given it a good report thereby extending its deemed university status till 2012. But, after the HRD Ministry, under an independent agency began to verify UGC's list of deemed universities, Jaypee failed to make the cut.

"The committee set up by the HRD ministry didn't even visit our college. How can the de-recognise us based on a 15 minute presentation," says VC of Jaypee University.

"I am shocked, I wish they had taken the time to see what we offer."

The first UGC report had given the college a high rating for maintaining a healthy student teacher ratio and for providing the right academic and administrative infrastructure, something that makes students confident about winning this legal battle.

"I don't think the university will get de-recognised because it is a good university with a very good faulty," says one of the students of the University.

As a deemed university, the institute has the flexibility to set its own fee structure, admission procedure and syllabus.

So even as universities say they have made the grade and deserve to be recognised, it will be the Supreme Court's hearing in March that will determine if these institutions pass the test.
