Harvesting Project The Pits!, NA Not Taken Care Of It Since Its InstallationBy Shastri Sir, Section Environment
Noida, high-tech city of India's largest state, Uttar Pradesh, boasts several advancements. Sadly, conserving natural resources, especially water, is not a concern for Noida Authority (NA) nor the Gautam Budh Nagar District Administration.
Today, environmental issues have caught everybody's attention but NA seems to be sleeping over the need of water conservation, say locals. ![]() Most of the big parks in the city where water harvesting should be mandatory , owing to the depletion of groundwater, is unable to conserve rainwater because there is no system in place. "In our sector, we have dozens of parks but only Shimla Park has water harvesting pits. To residents' dismay , NA has not taken care of it since its installation and now the pit is of no use.
People even throw garbage in it," said Yogender Sharma of Sector 12. "In Sector 40, NA started a water harvesting system in the park facing Sai Temple. But that too is not working as NA's Horticulture Department has ignored it," said SK Sudan RWA general secretary of Sector 41. Source: Hindustan Times By Vinod Rajput Harvesting project the pits! Further he adds, "We have tried to convert E-block Park as Model Park because it is the biggest park in our sector. We also plan to conserve water in this park but some residents and NA do not support such an idea." Deaf to demands Residents blame NA for not working on their suggestions of water conservation in the city despite repeated reminders. "We have written numerous times to all concerned over the issue but all in vain. We demand a water harvest- ing system to be installed in all city parks. We do not want to waste even a single drop of rain water," said NP Singh, president of Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations (FONRWA) who accuses NA of not taking residents' opinion seriously .
He quickly adds, "We have sent a proposal and advised NA's Horticulture Department that all green belts along with city parks have a water conservation system in place. If this is not done then soon there will be no groundwater in Noida." Water harvesting projects are not maintained properly in sectors 12, 19, 47, 48, 55, 40 and 52, say residents. "We have 12 parks in our sector but there is no conservation project in any of the parks," said Bhimsen Gulati RWA general secretary of Sector 52. On the contrary, NA officials maintain that all water harvesting systems have been installed. "Fifteen big city parks have water conservation facilities. Some residents dump garbage in it but our karamcharis clean it on a regular basis. We have begun declogging the pits, in order to conserve water in the upcoming rainy season," said B Prabhakar, the Horticulture Director of Noida Authority .
